Bulgaria

VarnaAfter years under communism the Bulgarian people are struggling to build a market economy.  The beauty of neighborhoods built in the early 1900’s and the production of rose oil mask the real need of the Bulgarians to learn of the Gospel.  The relationship between the historic orthodox church and state make ministry in this Balkan nation a challenge to the Bulgarian Lutheran Church.  Four Bulgarian pastors and three Bulgarian deaconesses assist in this ministry headquartered in the capital city of Sophia.

Taiwan

MembersThe Taiwan population is just over 23 million people. The official language of Taiwan is Mandarin Chinese. The traditional religion on Taiwan is a mix of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. But the greatest barrier to the gospel of Jesus Christ is ancestor worship. The Christian Church body in Taiwan that the WELS cooperates with is called the CLEC, the Christian Lutheran Evangelical Church. There are 4 churches in the CLEC with a total membership of 150 souls. Through the powerful and active word of God and through prayer we seek to reach out with the good news of Jesus Christ and the peace, joy, love and eternal forgiveness that only Jesus offers.

Malawi

WomanMalawi means ‘flame’ in the national language of the land, Chichewa.  Certainly the Spirit’s fire can be witnessed at work in the WELS’ largest foreign mission.  Since our beginning in 1963, the Lutheran church has grown to over 30,000 members in 135 congregations served by 18 national pastors and aided by 7 missionaries.  The good news of Jesus Christ is proclaimed in both rural and urban communities from the north to the south of the country.  An extensive pastor training program works to provide more national pastors for the future.  Work is progressing to develop the Lutheran Church of Central Africa – Malawi Synod into an independent sister body of the WELS.  Indeed the Spirit’s fire is burning brightly in Malawi, Africa.

Brazil

StudentsIn Brazil, the world’s fifth-largest country, a team of two missionaries to Brazil and one LATTE member stationed in Brazil are working together with the recently established Brazilian Lutheran Church (ILB). In a country roughly the same size as the continental United States, the young Brazilian Church is served by two national pastors and a national vicar as well as by an evangelist and future seminary students. WELS missionaries in Brazil seek to encourage and help in the ILB’s work by modeling ministry and offering theological instruction for future generations of Brazilian called workers, as well as working with leaders who are taking over new responsibilities on the local and national levels of the ILB.  Currently the ILB is committed to faithfully applying God’s Means of Grace in the cities of Dourados (Mato Grosso do Sul), Gravataí (Rio Grande do Sul) and Presidente Prudente (São Paulo).
