Bio: Rebecca Wendland

WendlandsMy family and I are located in Blantyre, Malawi, Africa. We have been serving here for about 5 years. My husband, Rob, is a bush missionary in southern Malawi, spreading God’s Word to over 13 congregations and to thousands of Malawians each month.

I am a 1996 graduate of MLC. Since graduation I have used my teaching skills in Wisconsin at both Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School and Redemption Lutheran school before moving overseas. I now use my teaching skills to home school, teach a children’s bible group, conduct ladies’ bible studies and craft sessions, participate in choir and play keyboard at our urban English speaking church, Beautiful Saviour.

One surprising observation I had after living here awhile was that it isn’t just the Africans who need to hear about their Lord. There are many expatriates from different countries all over the world working here. They also can benefit from our Christian message. I found it ironic to travel all the way to Malawi to talk about God to an American gal who didn’t think God fit into her life. Each day is an adventure here, often offering countless opportunities to spread the word!

Can these supplies be sent UPS or mail ups?

Infant care supplies are in great need. Bottles, nipples, and bottle brushes. Any type or size. Clothing for infants and children sizes 9 months and older. Smaller sizes than 9 months are not as useful due to the physical characteristics of African children. Girls wear dresses (no pants) but shorts are allowed. Boys wear shorts, pants and shirts. Tshirts are always good choices. Clothing does not need to be new. Gently used is good. They love bright colors – avoid white.

Sending anything to Malawi or Zambia is expensive. All packages must be sent through the postal service or FedEx. Postal rates average $40 for a 6 pound box. Bottles are very light but clothing is heavier. There is also an international flat rate box which costs about $50 for a shirt size box. As of late, they have not been having any problem with the post office accepting duty free boxes in the past few months, but that can change anytime in Africa.

Donations to the Central Africa Medical Mission are always appreciated and help buy formula and nutrient additives for the children’s food.
