Fun in Lusaka

Some of you may wonder what I do for fun.  Living in the ever-growing and happening city of Lusaka has its advantages over other places in Zambia.  In the past 10 years or so, there has been a lot of money put into buildings, namely office complexes and shopping centers in Lusaka.  This is mostly due to the influx of expatriates (people from other countries) who are doing a great deal of aid work in Zambia.  About 5 years ago, the fun factor went up a couple of notches with the building of a shopping complex called Arcades that has a movie theater with 5 screens and there is also bowling alley!  Jason and I used to have friends in Malawi who came to Lusaka to catch a movie or two on the big screen, and I suppose they came to see us too, but the main attraction was the movie theater.  The movies that come are mostly movies from the states.  Every once in awhile we get a Bollywood film because there are many people from India here, and we do a get a couple from Europe.  The movies come out a couple months after they come out in the states.  Another great thing is that movies Monday through Friday are only about 3 dollars and then 6 dollars on the weekends, which is much less than the states ever-increasing movie prices!

We frequent the bowling alley less often than the movie theater, partly because it is more expensive than the movies and bowling can be a frustrating game when you get gutter ball after gutter ball.  Am I a terrible bowler?  Well, I would say I do well for a couple of throws and then it either goes downhill or slightly uphill from there.  It is fun when the alley turns off the lights and puts on the black lights so that anything white glows and they have some special bowling balls that also glow in the black light.  I suppose you would have never imagined things like this in Zambia!

Amanda and Alisad Banda (staff member of Lutheran H&D Program) after running a half marathon in LusakaNow not everyone would call this fun, but I find races absolutely fun!  Races do not happen very often here so I try to take advantage of every one that I can!  This past weekend I was able to do a triathlon organized by the American International School.  It was a beautiful day for the race. We swam 400 meters in the pool at the school, then went out of the school compound and biked on some lovely bumpy roads for 12 km and then ran for another 4 km on the same bumpy roads.  I also found the triathlon especially fun because I won in the women’s category and got a prize!  We also got a fun yellow t-shirt, but after the first wash the letters already faded. L  You can never rely on the printing quality of t-shirts here.   Well those are a few of the fun things that Jason and I do in the lovely city of Lusaka Zambia.  God has blessed us with a number of opportunities to take a break from the “normal” life and relax.  More on what fun things there are to do in Zambia as a country next time…

Hi Amanda! It’s been a long time since I’ve talked to you. Glad to hear you’re happy and healthy and loving life in Africa. I’m preparing to move abroad as well. Starting in August I will be working for KW teaching English in Albania for a year. I’ll take any advise you have on moving to a foreign country so I can be as happy as you are! May God bless your continued efforts!
