We Have a River!

p1060097.JPG

Here’s a sight that hasn’t been seen for 17 years! There’s water in the Rio Nazas (Nazas River)!

Let me explain…The Rio Nazas serves as a divider between Torreón and its neighboring city, Gomez Palacio. It once was a raging river. However, years ago a dam was built and the water rerouted. That way, the government can better distribute the water in this desert region. So when people here refer to the Rio Nazas, they are talking about a dry riverbed. It even has basketball courts in it!

In the last month, however, we’ve had an unusual amount of rain. So much, in fact, that officials here needed to open the dam and let much of the water flow on its natural course through town.dmothers walk

What you see above is the Rio Nazas as of last week. As I mentioned, people here say the last time something like this happened was 17 years ago!

A few days ago, we drove to the river and walked around. There were many people doing the same thing. We even saw a number of families helping their dear granMike & Trinitydmothers to the river’s edge.Trinity found it extremely interesting, and kept repeating the phrase, “Agua, agua!”

Here are a couple of pictures of Mike showing her around:
