Rain, cholera & the hungry season

All around us the maize is getting taller and the rains are becoming sparse, a telltale sign that the end of the rainy season is near.  This year we are especially excited for the rains to end, but not merely because of the muddy roads.  We love how lush and green everything looks and how fresh the earth smells after a good downpour.  Unfortunately, the rainy season in Malawi is intertwined with the cholera season and the hungry season.  Both of which have been exceptionally harsh this year.

This year’s cholera outbreak has made national news as one of the worst in years.   Continue reading
