Malawi funeral reflections

The scorching sun beats down.  The earth is dry with very little signs of life.  Everyone carries this film of dust on their skin, some more noticeable than others.  We have gathered at the funeral of one of our employees, Mr. Thangaludzu.  He had worked for Lutheran Mobile Clinic faithfully for the last 25 years.

As I sit under a huge shade tree I think of how much death I’ve seen while living in Malawi.  It’s everywhere.  At times it becomes discouraging. Then I think of my own sin and how grateful I am that my Lord and Savior faced death not only for me but for everyone sitting around me. I silently pray that the words that are spoken here today are heard loud and clear.  That Jesus died for all.  Amazing grace how sweet the sound.

Then comes the time for the clinic to say something to the family, friends, village, and chiefs.  I get a little choked up when I get to the scripture I’ve chosen from the book of Job.  Job 19:25-27 “I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth.  And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; I myself will see him with my own eyes- I and not another.  How my heart yearns withing me!”

How my heart yearns that the people of Malawi come to know the true God who will come and take them to live with him forever. Take them to a place of eternal life without pain, suffering, and starvation.  I am so thankful for the Malawian pastors who preached the word of God in it’s truth and purity.  Please continue to keep Lutheran Mobile Clinic and our national pastors in your prayers as we reach out to those suffering loss and give them encouragement through Christ Jesus.
